Thawte was founded in South Africa by Mark Shuttleworth as the first certificate authority to hand out certificates to public institutions outside of the US. Thawte rapidly reached a 40% share of the global SSL market. In 2000, Thawte was taken over by VeriSign and has been playing an important role in VeriSign’s trusted brands ever since. Since 1995, Thawte has issued more than 945.000 SSL- and Code Signing Certificates and offers security for identities and transactions in over 240 countries worldwide.
